This is the new fresh roast model that SR 540, so it's an updated version of the SR 500 and I'm going to show you how to roast with it. so the first thing for anyone who's used the 500, there are a few differences to the controls.
So you've got a run cool button on/off and then you just have a single dial. You can use that dial to adjust the time, the heat setting, and the fan speed. One really cool thing about the SR 540 compared to the SR 500 is that it gives you way more heat settings. So you can actually go between 0 to 9 for heat versus. The old model where it
was just that switch high medium or low. So this is definitely going to give you a little bit more flexibility in terms of profiling that kind of thing.
The next thing that you might notice is it has a new roast chamber, there are a few things that I really like about it. One I think the handle is a little easier to use, it also is a much wider diameter compared to the old roast chamber, it does a better job of kind of circulating the beans you don't have to worry so much about agitation during the
first few minutes of your roast. Better visibility doesn't have that kind of band and then my personal favorite feature is it actually secures into the base, it has these little notches so you can actually lock it in. So unlike with the old one where it was really tippy and it was really easy to break your roast chamber. This is going to give you
a little bit of added security.
The only downside is it is all new replacement parts, so your old top CAF and chaff
collector because they also have the wider opening are not going to fit. You will notice on the chaff collector it has these kind of added two prongs, what that does is when you put this on again it kind of secures it into place right around that handle. Still a little tippy I'd be a little careful but compared to the old model far more stable. So in terms of my dose of coffee, this guy can handle I'd say right about up to five ounces, about 140 grams. They do include this little kind of scoop their recommended dose is four scoops, we found best results right around four ounces so that's what I measured out. it's about a hundred and thirty grams.
So I'm going to go ahead and turn this guy on. The original factory settings have the fan at about five, the heat at nine, and then the time I think is around six or so. You can change the default settings just as soon as you turn it on by toggling around and moving. I just have my fan all the way up my power all the way up and I also turn to the timer all the way up. It has a countdown feature that I think is a little bit confusing so I'm also going to use a separate timer for my roast. Let's get started.
So one of my favorite features about the new fresh roast is it actually has a thermostat and can give you a real-time temperature settings. It's not in the bean mass it's measuring the temperature of the air going in so if you do want a specific being temp, you can still do the same kind of Pat where you thread the thermocouple in through the top. But what I'm going to do if you just move the dial really quickly to the right, ninety degrees it'll switch over to showing you the temperature. so just for the first minute or so of the roast I'm going to keep the fan all the way up just to make sure while the beans are heavier, they're getting agitated. Then I'm gonna turn the fan a little bit down just to help it village Pete going into first crap. I'm gonna go ahead and push down, that's gonna bring me back to my settings, toggle over to the fan, and turn it down to seven. as soon as it stops flashing you can turn it again and it'll bring you right back.
Okay so it looks like we're just about entering first crack, starting to hear a few pops here and there, temperature is just about four 15 degrees, were almost four minutes into the roast so pretty similar timing wise to the old models of the fresh roast. Now that we're in first crop I'm going to turn my power setting down a little bit, and then once it finishes flashing, I'm going to give it another sharp turn to bring me back to temperature. Stop this guy's starting to hear some crackles, put it into pool mode and then I'm gonna toggle over to my fan and turn my fan all the way up just so it cools
down really fast. All right it's about an eight-minute roast through the cooling cycle right around 11 minutes all said and done. And there's our coffee.
